Improving Mental Health Access for Students Act
Congress is testing whether a few extra lines of ink on student IDs can save young lives. A new bipartisan bill would put crisis hotlines in every student’s pocket as youth suicide rates keep climbing.

Education lawmakers are clustering around student safety, campus accountability, and the politics of new technology—not big structural reform. The clearest signals are HR5486, the Tyler Clementi anti-harassment bill, which has a striking 103 cosponsors and would force colleges taking federal aid to tighten harassment rules and transparency; HR3624, a bipartisan push to put crisis hotline information on student IDs as Congress searches for low-cost responses to the youth mental health crisis; and S3063, the LIFE with AI Act, which points to the next front in education fights by giving parents more control over how schools and ed-tech companies use student data in AI-powered tools. Also worth noting: the Senate already moved the National STEM Week Act by unanimous consent, but the real action to watch is whether any of the House education-and-safety bills can break out of committee—and whether AI oversight starts to eclipse older school policy debates.
