Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor a dear friend and extraordinary woman of faith, and a living testament to courage and resilience: Ms. Yolanda Jackson. This week, the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will present Yolanda with its Iron Strong Award for her courageous battle with breast cancer. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition. I have known Yolanda for more than 20 years. We became fast friends as neighbors in 2005, after we moved into the same apartment complex in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mr. Speaker. I rise today with my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus at a moment of profound consequence for our democracy--a moment when Black representation in America is under attack. What we are witnessing is about more than just a court case. It is about more than just a political disagreement. We are witnessing a coordinated effort to dismantle the hard-fought gains of the Civil Rights Movement and take us back to the Jim Crow era. Mr. Speaker, this is a five-alarm-fire.
Biography
Terri Sewell began her career as a civil rights attorney, advocating for voting access and economic justice in Alabama. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010, she represents Alabama’s 7th District. Sewell has prioritized expanding health care access, strengthening voting rights, and promoting job growth in underserved communities. She played a leading role in reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act and serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, where she advances initiatives for economic equity. Sewell is recognized for her collaborative approach and commitment to amplifying the voices of her constituents.
