Biography
Markwayne Mullin served as the junior U.S. senator from Oklahoma from January 2023 until March 2026, when he left the Senate to become U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security after President Trump nominated him to succeed Kristi Noem. A Republican, Mullin previously represented Oklahoma's 2nd congressional district in the House from 2013 to 2023 before winning the 2022 special election to fill Jim Inhofe's seat. A member of the Cherokee Nation and former owner of his family's plumbing business, Mullin was the first tribal citizen in the Senate since 2005 and, with his Cabinet appointment, became the first Cherokee Nation citizen to serve in the U.S. Cabinet.
